North Carolina Skiing
Nearby Spruce Pine in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains lie several well-known
southeast ski resorts. Four ski areas are located in the High County among the Blue Ridge Mountains, and offer premier ski conditions in the
southeast. The cold and sometimes harsh climate of the High County makes for great snowmaking possibilities all winter long at all
the local ski areas. Located in the Banner Elk area are
3 distinct North Carolina ski resorts that offer fantastic ski conditions in season. An additional ski area is nestled between Boone and Blowing Rock North Carolina.
Sugar Mountain is the largest ski area in the High Country featuring 20 downhill slopes and trails, 4 tubing runs, and an outdoor ice skating facility. Sugar Mountain offers long runs, some up to a mile long, making up more than 115 skiable acres that accommodate all abilities. Quality manmade snow blankets the ski area throughout the season.
Hawsknest ski area, located in Seven Devils NC, attracts many visitors to the High Country. The ski area features a dozen slopes of varying difficulty, a terrain park, and a ski shop. Hawksnest offers night skiing on their fully lighted downhill slopes. Additionally, Hawksnest offers tubing at the largest tubing park in NC with 81,000 foot long lanes. Like all other area resorts, ski and snowboarding lessons are available.
Beech Mountain is home to the highest ski area in the Eastern United States at an elevation of up to 5,500 feet. Among the snow-covered 830 vertical feet of varied terrain are
10 lifts and 15 downhill slopes offering varied challenges. Beech Mountain features night skiing on all slopes each evening as well as ski or snowboard lessons for those needing to sharpen their skills.
Appalachian Ski Mountain, located between Boone and Blowing Rock, offers guests a welcoming atmosphere and an abundance of manmade snow. Appalachian Ski Mountain features superb snowmaking capabilities at their family owned and operated facility. Appalachian’s shorter runs are most accommodating to novice skiers, and its
2 terrain parks challenge even expert snowboarders. Outdoor ice skating is also a recreation enjoyed by children and adults alike. Ski and
snowboard instruction is offered through French Swiss Ski College.
