NC Hiking
The High Country of North Carolina is an outdoor playground for hiking enthusiasts. Spruce Pine and its neighboring mountain regions offer a plethora of hiking opportunities and natural beauty. Unique to the High Country is the Appalachian Trail’s appearance along the Blue Ridge Mountains. Several access points scatter the Blue Ridge Parkway. Additionally, the Blue Ridge Parkway offers several NC hiking opportunities in the High Country.

Linville is home to the grand canyon of North Carolina, Linville Gorge. The gorge is quite scenic and rugged, featuring dense hardwood/pine forests making for a rough terrain. More than 15 trails are offered for exploration at Linville Gorge. Several areas are accommodating for hiking and backpacking, such as Wilson Creek, Lost Cove and Curtis Creek. Not far away is North Carolina’s only cavern in Linville North Carolina. The caverns rest inside of Humpback Mountain and still actively deposit minerals. The completely underground trail is open to the public for tours.

A favorite among North Carolina tourism destinations is Grandfather Mountain, located in Linville NC. The privately owned natural reserve features wildlife habitats, the infamous Mile High Swinging Bridge, and several nature walks and NC hiking trails. The 228-foot suspension bridge that extends 80 feet at more than a mile elevation attracts thousands of visitors annually. Grandfather Mountain offers 11 hiking trails that vary in difficulty for a small fee. These hikes offer magnificent views of the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains.

Moses H. Cone Julian Price Memorial Park, located at mile marker 294-297 along the Blue Ridge Parkway near Blowing Rock North Carolina is a great hiking destination. The park features the historic manor house where, during the summer months, interpretative talks are frequently given. The park also contains more NC hiking trails than any other developed area along the Parkway. More than 26 miles of historic carriage roads are available for hiking on the estate. Nearby at the Price Memorial Park more strenuous hiking trails are offered.
